Background
History of Monaco-USA Association
Created in 1973 at the express wish of H.S.H. Princess Grace, the Monaco-USA Association has for the past 34 years been the Principality’s main rendezvous for resident Americans, native Monegasque citizens - as well as friends of both nations from around the globe.
Throughout her married life as the wife of H.S.H. Prince Rainier III, Princess Grace worked tirelessly in her adopted country for several favourite charities: the Monegasque Red Cross, the Princess Grace Ballet School and for many international organizations assisting underprivileged children
As the wife of the Sovereign Prince of Monaco, Princess Grace never missed an opportunity of fostering cultural educational and artistic exchanges between her native America and her adopted Principality. In 1976, to commemorate the American Bicentennial, the Princess participated in the Edinburgh Festival by reading poems that she herself selected for their illustration of the American spirit.
The Monaco- USA Association is the direct fruit of the Princess' desire to foster a sincere friendship between the two countries. At the time of its establishment in 1973, the Princess impressed on the first Committee Members that she hope this Association would evoke the true American spirit of open friendship, good cheer, a willing hand to help others and, above all, informality. She intended that the meetings of the group be kept casual – and affordable to all “from the CEO of an international company to an “au pair” working for a Monaco family” – as she herself once put it.
The Association has, over the years, attempted to follow our illustrious founder’s wishes. The Princess herself - as well as Prince Rainier and their children frequently participated in the Association’s events. Today her son,
H. S. H. Prince Albert II, following in his mother’s footsteps, goes out of his way to support and encourage Monaco-USA by his periodic attendance at our sponsored events. His relaxed, friendly, and outgoing personality certainly lends itself well to his mother’s goals when she originally founded the Association.
